Noted producer and director Karan Johar has finally responded to the backlash faced by newcomers Ibrahim Ali Khan and Khushi Kapoor following their performances in the recent release Nadaaniyan.
The film, produced by Karan Johar’s Dharmatic Entertainment, has faced severe criticism, especially on social media, which quickly turned into a meme frenzy after its release on Netflix on March 7.
During a press meet for the trailer launch of a Punjabi film, Karan Johar addressed the criticism and expressed his disapproval of the way people have been attacking the film and its young actors. He condemned the choice of language used in the criticism, saying that it was unfair to target the new generation of actors in such a harsh manner.
He mentioned, "Puraane film ka andaaz hai, puraane gaane ka yeh andaaz hai, 'Kuch toh log kahenge, logo ka kaam hai kehna, chhoro bekaar ki baatein, beet na jaaye raina,'" Johar quoted. (Some people will always have something to say, it’s their job to talk. Let them be, don't bother with unnecessary things, and let the night pass.)
Previously, other industry figures like Sonu Sood, Hansal Mehta, and Vikram Bhatt also voiced their concerns, urging the public to be more sensitive when critiquing the performances of young actors. They emphasised that these new faces are still finding their footing in the industry and should be given room to grow without facing unnecessary hostility.
Despite the backlash, Johar remains supportive of the project and its cast. Nadaaniyan has sparked a wave of internet memes, but it also highlights the growing trend of viral responses to films in today’s digital age.
Fans and critics alike are voicing their opinions, but Karan Johar’s defence underscores the importance of supporting young talent in a constructive manner.
