Kammattam is Zee5's first original Malayalam web series. It tries to meet the high standards that Malayalam movies have set for crime thrillers in the past few years.
Shan Thulasidharan directed the show, which stars Sudev Nair. It is based on real events that transpired in Kerala. The idea is great, but the execution doesn't live up to expectations.
The Plot:
Kammattam tells the story of the search for answers about Samuel Umman's (Jeo Baby) death. Inspector Antonio George, played by Sudev Nair, quickly concludes that it wasn't an accident and begins looking into a case linked to a cooperative bank scam. As the inquiry reveals cold-blooded killings and financial misdeeds, it keeps viewers guessing.
A lot of people were interested in the idea that the series was filmed in just 11 days, but it looks like the pace of production shows up on screen as well.

The story never becomes boring because it moves quickly, but this also means that things happen out of nowhere and plot ideas are left unexplored. Unlike shows like Kerala Crime Files, which looked into the personal lives of its detectives, Kammattam stays focused on the crime and doesn't give its characters any attention.
Ratheesh Mohanan's smart editing keeps the plot together, while Prakash Velayudhan's cinematography makes it feel real. The background music by 4 Musics adds to the mood of the thriller, even though it sometimes seems too much.
Sudev Nair portrays the tough inspector, and Jeo Baby, Ajay Vasudev, Jins Baskar, and Akhil Kavalayoor assist him out a lot. Kavalayoor is impressive in a serious part after being funny in other roles. Some of the supporting actors don't always look the same, which makes the overall effect less strong.
Verdict:
Kammattam has all it needs to be a good movie: a strong central case, a talented ensemble, and inspiration from real-life crime. But it doesn't stand out in Malayalam's already great criminal thriller scene because the tale is rushed and not very deep. Fans of the genre will like it once, but it doesn't live up to the standards set by its predecessors.
