Veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan is all set to narrate Ram Katha on the occasion of Ram Navami on April 6. The special live stream will begin at 8 AM and continue until 6.30 PM. During the event, Bachchan will narrate the timeless stories of Ram Katha, covering all seven kands of the Ramayana.
However, digitization has clearly changed the way people celebrate festivals. Previously, festivals like Maha Shivratri, Ram Navami, Diwali, and Holi were primarily celebrated in temples, homes, and community spaces, fostering a deep sense of togetherness.
However, with the advent of digital platforms, the way people engage with these celebrations is evolving. Technology is bridging distances, enabling people from various locations to take part in real-time, regardless of where they are.
From TV Screens to Uninterrupted Experiences
Experiencing key festival moments, like the Maha Shivratri aarti at dawn or the Ram Navami processions, were meant to be physically present at temples or pilgrimage sites. For those who couldn't travel, television broadcasts offered a limited alternative, showing only selected highlights and often interrupted by ads. As a result, much of the festival’s continuous prayers, rituals, and processions were missed.
However, streaming platforms have now changed this as they allow people to watch uninterrupted live coverage of major festival events. Whether it’s the Maha Shivratri aarti or the Ram Navami procession moving through historic streets, viewers can now join in from anywhere in the world without the need to travel or deal with interruptions.
Breaking Barriers of Distance and Accessibility
Streaming platforms have made it easier for everyone to take part in festivals, no matter the obstacles. Distance, health issues, or financial limitations are no longer barriers. Busy at work? Simply watch the replay. Platforms like JioHotstar help the Indian diaspora stay connected to their traditions. Now, Aarti chants can be experienced and understood from anywhere in the world, bringing the essence of the festival to everyone.
From Passive Viewing to Active Participation
The recent changes are not only about making festivals accessible but also about getting people involved. Festivals are no longer just something to watch. Features like live chats, virtual aartis, and digital donations allow people to participate actively.
Whether it’s lighting a virtual diya on Diwali or joining a live prayer session from miles away, these experiences feel more personal and connected. By blending tradition with technology, a new kind of spiritual closeness is emerging, one that brings people together while also feeling deeply personal.
A New Era of Festival Participation
More people than ever are embracing digital platforms to experience festivals. JioHotstar has recently live-streamed Maha Shivratri and notably garnered over 3.9 crore viewers. This shift shows a growing preference for uninterrupted and in-depth festival coverage, something traditional TV broadcasts often lack.

However, the flexibility of streaming is one of the major reasons behind the recent changes. Whether watching live or on demand, people can now participate in festivals at their convenience, making the experience more personal and enjoyable.
The Future of Festivals in the Digital World
As technology continues to evolve, digital festival experiences will become even more immersive. Virtual reality (VR) could soon let users "walk" through temple corridors or join processions as if they were physically there. AI-driven recommendations could personalize these experiences further, making them more engaging.
The streaming platforms are expanding to regional and lesser-known festivals, so more people will have access to India’s rich cultural traditions.
