Chiranjeevi and Surekha met for the first time by chance when he went to Allu Ramalingaiah's house with a friend. Because her father wasn't home, Surekha said hello to the guest and offered him coffee. This meeting, even if it was short, left a mark on her, and her interest in the young actor rapidly developed into admiration.

Allu Ramalingaiah, on the other hand, didn't want his daughter to marry an actor at first. He wanted her to marry a government worker or someone who desired to be an IAS official. Chiranjeevi changed his views because of his strong beliefs. Allu Ramalingaiah tried to give him liquor many times when they were on a train, but Chiranjeevi politely declined, saying he was a devoted follower of Lord Hanuman.

He modified his mind even more when he worked with Chiranjeevi in Mana Voori Pandavulu (1978). Chiranjeevi was unsure at first because his career was in a bad state, but he agreed, and the wedding took place on February 20, 1980, with the consent of both families.
