Disney’s beloved animated classic Tangled is officially making a comeback — this time as a live-action film.
According to Deadline, after putting the project on hold earlier this year in April, Disney has decided to move forward with the live-action remake of the 2010 hit movie.
Michael Gracey, best known for directing The Greatest Showman, has been signed on to direct the adaptation.
While the casting is still being finalized, reports suggest that Scarlett Johansson, 40, is in talks to play Mother Gothel, Rapunzel’s manipulative captor — a role originally voiced by Donna Murphy in the animated version.
Tangled follows the tale of Princess Rapunzel, a young woman with magical, long blonde hair who escapes her tower with the help of a charming thief named Flynn Rider. The original animated film, inspired by the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, starred Mandy Moore as the voice of Rapunzel and Zachary Levi as Flynn.
Following its success, Tangled spawned two spin-offs — the 2012 short film Tangled Ever After and the 2017 animated TV series Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure.
In November 2020, Moore and Levi reunited in a special video for Walt Disney Animation Studios to celebrate the film’s 10th anniversary.

Earlier this year, actor Corey Mylchreest revealed in an interview with Seventeen magazine that he had auditioned for the role of Flynn Rider. The interview took place shortly after Disney paused the project.
Meanwhile, the Disney Live Action division continues to expand its lineup, recently acquiring the rights to Impossible Creatures as part of its ongoing effort to reimagine beloved stories with a fresh, modern perspective.
