Halle Berry appears to defy Cannes dress code days after pledging to follow rules

It seems Halle Berry might have had a change of heart when it comes to following the newly instated dress code at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. Just days prior, the actress, who is currently serving as a jury member, expressed her intention to abide by the rules. However, her appearance at the premiere of Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning suggests otherwise.

The buzz began when Halle walked the red carpet in a stunning, voluminous gown complete with a train – two elements that the new Cannes regulations explicitly forbid. Despite this apparent breach of the dress code, reports indicate that Halle was not denied entry to the premiere screening. This has led many to believe that while she seemingly broke the rules, there were no immediate consequences.

The introduction of the new dress code caught many attendees, including Halle, off guard. It was announced a mere day before the festival commenced, causing a last-minute wardrobe adjustment for the Oscar winner. Speaking at a Cannes jury press conference, Berry revealed, "I had an amazing dress by Gupta that I cannot wear tonight because it's too big of a train. I'm not going to break the rules." Consequently, she opted for a chic black and white gown by Jacquemus for her Day 1 appearance, a dress that adhered to the no-train stipulation.

Despite her initial commitment, it appears that witnessing other attendees sporting extravagant trains and voluminous gowns might have influenced Halle's decision. On Wednesday, she graced the premiere of the latest Mission Impossible film in a striking black and pink Celia Kritharioti gown. The dress featured a dramatic high-low skirt with significant volume and, notably, a train.

As of now, Halle has not publicly commented on whether her choice of dress violated the festival's new guidelines. However, her gown was certainly not the only one testing the boundaries of Cannes' fashion police that evening. Hayley Atwell, a star of Mission Impossible, also turned heads in a breathtaking red gown from Giambattista Valli, which similarly boasted a very voluminous skirt.

The festival is still underway, and it's highly likely that more attendees will push the limits of the new dress code. This situation might prompt the festival organizers to reconsider their approach for future events, perhaps providing more advance notice of any such regulations to allow attendees ample time to plan their wardrobes accordingly. It remains to be seen how strictly the dress code will be enforced as the 2025 Cannes Film Festival progresses.
