Exclusive: Sumeet Vyas on playing a mysterious role in Detective Shergill, journey from Permanent Roommates and more
Sumeet Vyas, known for his authentic performances, ventures into the mystery thriller genre with Detective Shergill. In a chat with Moneycontrol.com, he discusses his new role and the experience of working alongside legends Boman Irani and Ratna Pathak Shah.
Talking about his character in Detective Shergill, Sumeet shared, "It's a very interesting character. Generally, the kind of character I play, he is very different from that. He is a very entitled boy or his father who has passed away in mysterious circumstances. And this is the kind of character which people obviously doubt. Because he is not a good son in a conventional sense. So, that is why people have a lot of doubts about him. So, in that sense, I had a lot of fun playing him. Generally, I was looking for the kind of character which is a little different from my character. You don't enjoy playing your own character."

On working with legendary actors, he said, "I mean, the experience was great. I didn't prepare to work with these actors particularly. I prepared for my role. But, the experience was lovely. It was better than I thought it would be. To be very honest."

Sumeet’s character is among the key suspects in the film. Talking about playing such a layered role, he reflected, "I mean, there are two things. There is Ravi's contribution in this. The way he edited the film. The way he designed the film. So, there is always a doubt whether you are guessing it right. And, for actors, you have to do your job as honestly as you can. You have to portray the scene with utmost honesty. After that, you can only hope that the audience buys into it."
Recalling his time with co-stars Diljit Dosanjh and Diana Penty, Sumeet fondly said, "Yeah, lots of them. I think, Diljit, I met, I thought, he is such a big superstar. You know, he would have a big entourage and this and that. But, he turned out to be a very simple guy. A very grounded person, very quiet person. So, and very focused on what he has to do. Which was very inspiring."

Talking about his groundbreaking web series Permanent Roommates and its aftermath, Vyas said, "There were many similar shows and opportunities. But it was important that I don't do the same thing and the same character again. It would be boring for me and for the audience as well. Watching the same thing again and again. So, in that sense, I also refrained from that."
