Guwahati is preparing for an emotional farewell to one of Assam’s most beloved cultural icons, Zubeen Garg, whose cremation is scheduled for tomorrow (September 23) at Sonapur’s Hatimura. The state government has confirmed that the legendary singer will be accorded full state honours in recognition of his unparalleled contribution to Assam’s music and cultural landscape.
In a deeply symbolic gesture, locals of Dimoria have announced that a 25-year-old sandalwood tree from Dimoria College will be offered for Zubeen’s final rites. Residents described the act as both a tribute and a source of solace, as the area itself has been chosen as the site for his samadhi. For many, this contribution reflects their grief but also their pride in being part of the singer’s final journey.

The inspection focused on ensuring that every arrangement is made with due respect and dignity. The government has also emphasized that this decision will help create a lasting memorial where thousands of fans can gather to pay homage in the years ahead.
Meanwhile, at Zubeen’s Kahilipara residence, his footprints were preserved as a permanent memory for future generations. This gesture, along with the offering of sandalwood from Dimoria, adds a layer of cultural and emotional resonance to the farewell.
Officials stated that Sonapur had been widely considered by Zubeen’s family and admirers as the most fitting location.
Discussions had taken place about other possibilities, but consensus has now been reached around Hatimura.
