Dhurandhar, one of the year’s most anticipated action thrillers, has received a crucial green signal from the Delhi High Court just days before its scheduled release. The court on Monday disposed of the petition filed by the family of Late Major Mohit Sharma, who had sought a stay on the film’s release, alleging that it drew heavily from the decorated officer’s life and covert missions without permission. No stay order has been issued.
The petition, filed on November 28 by Major Sharma’s parents, argued that several elements shown in the trailer and promotional material of Dhurandhar resemble the officer’s real-life operations in Kashmir. Major Sharma, an Ashoka Chakra and Sena Medal awardee, served with the Indian Army’s 1 Para (Special Forces) and was killed in action in Kupwara on March 21, 2009.
The matter came up today before Justice Sachin Datta. Senior Advocate Saurabh Kirpal, appearing for the producers, firmly denied any connection between the film and Major Sharma’s life, calling the petition “misconceived”. He added that Dhurandhar is a fictional story and does not portray any real individual.
Representing the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), CGSC Ashish Dixit informed the court that the film has been treated as a fictional work during the certification process. He confirmed that no material directly linking the film to Major Sharma had been placed before the board.
While disposing of the plea, the court declined to grant a stay on the film’s release. However, it directed the CBFC to expedite the certification process and “appropriately consider” the objections raised by Major Sharma’s parents before issuing final clearance.
About Dhurandhar
Directed by Aditya Dhar, Dhurandhar features Ranveer Singh in the lead role, supported by a star cast including Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, R Madhavan and child actor Sara Arjun. The trailer, released recently, generated strong reactions across social media, with viewers praising its scale and action design.
The film follows a highly skilled Indian intelligence officer who is sent on an undercover mission to infiltrate a terror network operating in Pakistan’s Lyari region. Although inspired by the genre of real Indian covert operations, the makers have maintained that the narrative is entirely fictional.
