Director Farah Khan and Karan Johar share a friendship that feels almost like a mix of guidance, humour, and a touch of magic.
Over the years, Karan hasn’t just been a colleague but a confidant — someone who has gently nudged Farah through life’s big decisions, from marriage to blockbuster film releases.
In an old interview with ZEE Cafe, Farah Khan had revealed that back in the early 2000s, she turned to Karan for a glimpse into her future through his tarot cards.
At the time, she was quietly dating Shirish Kunder, but Karan’s cards told him otherwise.
“He was the best tarot card reader I ever went to… Karan opened my cards and said, ‘B*tch! You haven’t told me you’re seeing somebody.’ I said, ‘Really?’ He said, ‘Listen, this person is very good for you. Look at this card. Just marry this person.’ He’s fabulous,” she recalled, laughing.
That advice led to Farah and Shirish marrying in 2004, and today they are proud parents to Czar, Anya, and Diva.
Karan’s influence didn’t stop at her personal life. Farah also credited him for guiding the release of her cinematic milestone, Om Shanti Om.
Nervous about competing with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya, she sought Karan’s advice. “I asked him, ‘Should we come on that date or not?’ He said, ‘Don’t let this date go,’” she said.
Taking his advice, Farah went ahead, and the gamble paid off spectacularly. Om Shanti Om became a box-office sensation, earning over Rs 152 crore worldwide and launching Deepika Padukone’s career, while Saawariya earned a modest Rs 39 crore.
