Emraan Hashmi defends Haq amid controversy over Muslim representation; says, ‘I wouldn’t have done this film if...’

Emraan Hashmi has responded to the growing controversy surrounding his upcoming legal drama Haq, and clarified that the film does not malign or target the Muslim community. The film, inspired by the landmark 1985 Shah Bano case, stars Hashmi alongside Yami Gautam. Following its trailer release, the film has sparked debate online.

Several social media users alleged that Haq portrays Muslims in a negative light, prompting Emraan to address the issue. “I read the script of this film, I saw it from the perspective of a creative actor, but for the first time in my career, I had to see that there is a sensitivity regarding a community, regarding my community,” he said to ANI.

Emraan, who identifies as a “liberal Muslim,” emphasised that Haq was made with balance and fairness. “I have to be a little cognisant and analyse it in a different way. What I have extrapolated from this film is that there is a very balanced point of view. We are not pointing a finger at any community or passing a judgment,” he added.

Emraan Hashmi reiterated that Haq was not intended to hurt sentiments. “As a liberal Muslim, I can say that I had no problems with the viewpoint of the film. Because we are not maligning any community. If we were, I wouldn’t have done this film,” he said firmly.

Directed by Suparn S Varma, Haq also features Yami Gautam in a pivotal role based on Shah Bano, the Muslim woman whose legal battle for alimony led to a landmark Supreme Court judgment and a national debate on religion, law, and women’s rights. The supporting cast includes Vartika Singh, Danish Husain, Sheeba Chadha, and Aseem Hattangady.

Produced by Vineet Jain, Vishal Gurnani, Juhi Parekh Mehta, and Harman Baweja, Haq is set for a theatrical release on November 7, 2025.
