Hollywood star and director Ben Affleck has opened up about his turbulent experience playing Batman in the DC Universe. In a recent interview with GQ magazine, Affleck revealed that portraying the iconic superhero was not as fulfilling as many might think. He candidly described the process as “excruciating” and shared that he has since lost interest in the genre altogether.
Affleck, known for his roles in critically acclaimed films and his directorial ventures, reflected on his time as the Caped Crusader in movies such as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, and The Flash. While fans were excited to see him don the cape, Affleck’s personal experience was quite the opposite.
“There are a number of reasons why that was a really excruciating experience,” he said. “And they don’t all have to do with the simple dynamic of being in a superhero movie. I am not interested in going down that particular genre again, not because of that bad experience, but just that I’ve lost interest in what was of interest about it to me.”
The actor admitted that the challenges extended beyond the film’s production dynamics. He pointed out deeper issues, saying, “A lot of it was misalignment of agendas, understandings, expectations.” He even acknowledged his own shortcomings during that period, adding, “I wasn’t bringing anything particularly wonderful into that equation… I had my own failings, significant failings, in that process and at that time.”

Despite the hurdles, Affleck’s performance as Batman has been appreciated by a section of fans for bringing a darker, more mature take on the character. However, it seems the actor has firmly closed the chapter on superhero roles for the foreseeable future.
Affleck was last seen in This Is Me… Now: A Love Story and is currently working on The Accountant 2, a sequel to his 2016 action-thriller.
