In a developing legal tussle, the Andhra Pradesh police are on the lookout for controversial filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma. The director, known for his unconventional films and outspoken persona, has stated his willingness to appear “digitally” for questioning. The situation escalated after the Maddipadu police in Prakasam district booked Varma for allegedly sharing objectionable content on social media targeting former Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and his family.
The controversy stems from Varma’s online posts, which reportedly carried derogatory remarks against N. Chandrababu Naidu, his son Nara Lokesh, and his daughter-in-law Brahmani.
These posts were allegedly shared during the promotions of his film Vyuham, released when the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) was in power. The posts have prompted multiple complaints across Andhra Pradesh, leading to several cases being registered against the filmmaker.
Police unable to locate RGV
The police reached Varma’s residence in Jubilee Hills on Monday morning to serve him a notice. However, the director was absent, and his phone remained switched off. Varma’s absence has raised speculation that he is avoiding arrest. According to reports, Varma has been absconding since the beginning of the week, further fueling suspicions about his non-compliance with police directives.
Despite his physical absence, Varma’s legal team has reportedly informed the authorities that the director is ready to cooperate with the investigation through virtual means. The filmmaker has already missed earlier summons issued for questioning and sought additional time to respond. His advocates cited prior commitments to a pre-scheduled film shoot as the reason for his inability to appear in person.

High Court Dismisses Varma’s Plea
Varma had approached the High Court seeking protection from arrest after receiving the first notice from the police. However, the court dismissed his petition, advising him to either appear before the authorities or seek legal recourse for additional time. The court’s decision has left Varma with no option but to address the police’s summons.
The Maddipadu police, leading the case, have stated their intent to pursue the matter, suspecting that Varma’s evasion could indicate his fear of arrest. Sources suggest that his controversial statements and social media activity targeting influential political figures have intensified scrutiny from law enforcement.
A History of Legal Challenges
This is not the first time Varma has faced legal challenges. Known for his provocative approach to storytelling and marketing, the filmmaker has often courted controversies. His film Vyuham, which centers on political intrigues, drew criticism from political circles, with claims that it intentionally discredited certain leaders. These incidents have only added to the polarizing nature of his public image.
