Music composer Amaal Mallik has spoken openly about his distant relationship with his uncle, Anu Malik, particularly in the wake of the sexual harassment allegations made against the latter during India’s MeToo movement.
In a candid conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Amaal clarified that he never considered Anu Malik a close family member and deliberately chose to remain silent during the controversy.
Reflecting on the difficult period, Amaal revealed that he felt deeply embarrassed by the accusations made against Anu Malik.
“I didn’t talk or support Anu Malik when he was accused during the MeToo movement. It was not my concern because I don’t consider him my family. I was very embarrassed when he was accused of these things. We never had a relationship. But I think if so many people raised their voice against him, I believe there must be some truth to it. Why would people come and say it otherwise? There is no smoke without fire. Five people can’t talk against the same person." He said.
Amaal also recalled a conversation with his father, music director Daboo Malik, who had expressed concern that Amaal might one day face similar allegations, he said "Once my dad asked me if I too will be dragged in this movement. I said, there is no chance. I can never be the person who will ask for physical favours in return of songs. All the girls worked with me have felt safe."

Despite sharing a surname and professional space, Amaal maintains a clear distance from Anu Malik and his family. Though polite when they happen to meet in public, he stated that he does not attend their family functions or maintain contact, describing the relationship as one rooted in professional rivalry rather than familial warmth. He mentioned, "I am respectful towards him when I see him in public. But after knowing his wrongdoings, I am not in good terms with him. I don’t have any relationship with his family. I haven’t met them in years. I don’t attend parties. They were invited for Armaan’s wedding. They had come too. It is more like professional rivalry."
Amaal Mallik recently sparked online discussion by implying that he had emotionally cut off contact with some members of his own extended family, which strengthened his position on upholding individuality and integrity in the music business.
