Singer-composer Amaal Mallik earlier made headlines after he cut all ties with his family and later reunited with them. The singer has recently opened up about the constant comparison from his singer brother, Armaan Malik, which he also cited as the reason behind cutting the ties with his parents.
During a recent interview with journalist Siddharth Kannan, Amaal Mallik stated that he has always had a great relationship with his brother, but it was their parents’ expectations that led him to make the tough decision. He further emphasised that his mother often compares the two brothers.
He said, “There was an issue with my mom. She couldn’t understand me. She comes from a corporate lawyer background. I, on the other hand, was living a disorganised, undisciplined, raw, rebellious artist. She wanted me to bring structure into my life, and I agreed, but I couldn’t follow through."
Amaal continued about the comparison and said, “She would compare my journey with Armaan, and that would affect her. But no two people walk the same path. Armaan and I are completely different—we do different kinds of music, different interviews, and we have different personalities. Still, the expectations kept building.”
The singer further elaborated on the pressure that had caused disagreements at home. He explained that people from the industry would call his father, complaining about his behaviour, which would stress his father out due to his heart condition. The singer would reassure his father not to worry. He further mentioned that he would explain to directors why he had declined their projects, but his parents eventually began feeling the pressure, too.
Amaal continued, "Dad would say, ‘Just meet the director, don’t say anything, just finish it.’ And I’d be like, ‘Why are they calling you when I haven't done anything?’ That’s when things started going south. Difference of opinion began building up.”
In March, Amaal Mallik announced cutting ties with his parents and confessed his struggle with clinical depression and the emotional distance within his family.
