Hollywood actress Jamie Lee Curtis, a resident of one of the California neighborhoods devastated by this week’s wildfires, announced on Thursday that her family is stepping up to support recovery efforts with a generous $1 million donation. The actress expressed her deep concern for the countless lives affected by the disaster and urged others to contribute in any way possible to aid those in need.
The Academy Award-winning actress shared that she, her husband, actor-director Christopher Guest, and their children had committed $1 million to aid "our great city and state and the great people who live there."
Curtis said she was in contact with officials about "where those funds need to be directed for the most impact." Her post featured a picture of smoke billowing above the famed Santa Monica Pier.
During a Wednesday night appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Curtis fought back tears as she recounted the destruction in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood.
"Where I live is on fire right now, literally the entire city of Pacific Palisades is on fire," she said. "This is literally where I live – everything, the market I shop in, the schools my kids go to. Friends, many, many, many, many, many friends, now have lost their homes."
"It's just a catastrophe," Curtis said.
Several celebrities, including Billy Crystal, James Woods, Paris Hilton, and Mandy Moore, revealed that their homes had been destroyed in the devastating wildfires. They joined many others in sharing their personal losses, with some using their platforms to raise awareness about the severity of the disaster and encourage donations to relief efforts. Their stories highlight the widespread impact of the fires, which have left countless families displaced and communities grappling with the aftermath.
As of Thursday, the Palisades fire and another blaze to the east of Los Angeles continued to burn. CORE, the aid organization co-founded by Sean Penn, announced it was providing masks and other essential supplies to support individuals in areas affected by poor air quality due to the wildfire smoke.
Jean Smart, star of Hacks, urged television networks to cancel their plans to broadcast upcoming Hollywood awards shows and redirect those funds toward wildfire relief efforts and supporting first responders.
"ATTENTION," the Emmy winner wrote on Instagram. "With ALL due respect during Hollywood's season of celebration, I hope any of the networks televising the upcoming awards will seriously consider NOT televising them and donating the revenue they would have garnered to victims of the fires and firefighters."
The Critics Choice Awards, originally scheduled for this month, has been postponed by two weeks due to the ongoing wildfires, while the announcement of next week's Oscar nominations has been delayed by two days. Additionally, several major film premieres have been canceled, and numerous television productions have come to a halt. The entertainment industry is grappling with significant disruptions as it prioritizes safety and support for affected communities, highlighting the widespread impact of the disaster on both personal lives and professional schedules.
