Initially, it was dominated by socialist ideologies before transitioning to become a stronghold of the Congress party. Subsequently, the BJP and Shiv Sena also made their mark in the constituency. Thane, also known as Thana, holds significant political and economic importance as a Lok Sabha constituency situated in the north-west of Maharashtra. Located in close proximity to Mumbai and within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Thane is a bustling urban center with a rich cultural heritage and a diverse demographic profile.

The Thane Lok Sabha constituency, comprising six Vidhan Sabha segments- Mira, Kopri, Owla, Thane, Airoli, and Belapur, holds a rich political history within Maharashtra. Initially part of the Kolaba Lok Sabha constituency, it later emerged as an independent seat, witnessing a series of political shifts over the years. It borders Maval, Mumbai South Central, Mumbai North East, Bhiwandi, Kalyan and has a total population of 3,202,797, classified under a General Reserved Seat for the 2024 Lok Sabha Election. Thane is voting in Phase 5 of the 2024 Lok Sabha election on Monday, May 20, 2024.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Shiv Sena's Rajan Baburao Vichare secured a convincing victory with 740,969 votes, defeating Congress candidate Anand Paranjape, who received 328,824 votes. The voter turnout stood at 50.03%, reflecting moderate civic engagement in the electoral process.

In the 2014 elections, Rajan Baburao Vichare also emerged victorious with 595,364 votes, surpassing his opponent from the NCP, Sanjeev Ganesh Naik, who received 314,065 votes.
