India a 'green shoot' for the world, any mandate other than Modi will lead to 'surprise and bewilderment': Ian Bremmer

Ian Bremmer - American political scientist and author - believes India's rise has been one of the 'green shoots' for the world, and there will be 'surprise and bewilderment' if Modi does not win another term on June 4, the Counting day.

Mandate for Modi?

Ian Bremmer's Eurasia group is predicting 305 seats for BJP in 2024 assembly elections (±10 seats), which is not much of a change from 2019, he said. India as an economy has 'underperformed for a long time but is now doing a lot better', Bremmer added. "This is also a country that was very inward-focused for a long time, but this region is now becoming much more of a global leader," he said.

When asked what happens if there were to be a different story that plays out on counting day other than a third term for PM Modi, Bremmer said there will be 'surprise and bewilderment' among the global community if the results are contrary. There will be Google searches to find out who would the next leader be, Bremmer said, because 'no one has been paying any attention to anyone except Modi on the international stage'. However, this will be an 'unexpected outcome', and at his political risk research and consulting firm - Eurasia Group - Bremmer 'isn't spending anytime looking at this possibility'.

Speaking exclusively to CNBC-TV18's Shereen Bhan, Bremmer called it an era of stability and India's rise, adding that the country has been trying to develop bridge relations with advanced democracies. Bremmer said India has been a representative of the private sector economically and a democracy even if everyone across the world 'does not agree how it is run'. India is moving to be the fourth largest economy in the world that seeks good relations with everyone, and G7 nations welcome India's rise, Bremmer added.

Global Outlook

Back in January, Bremmer had called 2024 to be the 'Voldemort of the years', one that no one wanted to talk about. The year 2024 has seen a range of geopolitical challenges, according to Ian Bremmer, ranging from the upcoming US elections, Russia-Ukraine conflict, the middle-east unrest and US-China relations, which he says are being managed right now but with some difficulty.
