Baramulla Assembly Election Results: National Conference's Javid Hassan Baig emerges victorious

National Conference's Javid Hassan Baig emerged victorious as he won his seat by over 11,000 votes, defeating Shoaib Nabi Lone.

NC's Javid Hassan Baig has taken a big lead over independent candidate Shoaib Nabi Lone. The current margin is over 11,000 votes in the last round of counting.

National Conference’s Javid Hassan Baig increased his lead by 7,514 votes over his closest rival and independent candidate Shoaib Nabi Lone after nine rounds. Three more rounds are left.

National Conference's Javid Hassan Baig is leading after three rounds with over 2,500 votes. The closes candidate to Baig currently is Shabir Ahmad Lone of Apni Party.

Early trends from counting of votes on Tuesday showed a tight contest in Jammu and Kashmir. In the UT, the Congress-National Conference alliance was tied at eight seats with the BJP, while the PDP was yet to lead in any seat, according to TV channels.

Prominent figures among those in the fray are NC leader Omar Abdullah (from Budgam and Ganderbal), Sajad Gani Lone of People’s Conference (from Handwara and Kupwara seats), Pradesh Congress Committee president Tariq Hamid Karra (Batamaloo) and BJP state president Ravindra Raina (Nowshera seat).

Counting of votes for the Assembly Elections in Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir begins.

The fate of candidates on 90 Vidhan Sabha seats across all 22 districts in Haryana and 90 seats across all 20 districts in J&K is being decided today.

Despite the pre-poll alliance, National Conference (NC) and the Congress party have fielded candidates in this seat. Javid Hassan Baig of NC will take on Congress’ Mir Iqbal Ahmad, while PDP’s Mohd Rafiq Rather is also in fray. Baig, who was with PDP at that time, had secured the seat in the last assembly election in 2014.

Congress candidate from Rajouri, Iftikhar Ahmed said, "In this festival of democracy people voted in large numbers. Elections were held after 10 years, there is great enthusiasm among people and this is the day of results. My best wishes to all candidates. I hope people's mandate will be respected and democracy will win."

The seat has a total of 25 candidates fighting it out for the first assembly election since 2014, when the People Democratic Party (PDP) under Mufti Mohammad Sayeed emerged as the single largest party and formed government in alliance with the BJP.

The parliamentary seat came into limelight in the recent Lok Sabha elections, when Sheikh Abdul Rashid, popularly known as Engineer Rashid, defeated former J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah.

Union minister Chirag Paswan on Monday asserted that he was confident of the NDA's victory in assembly elections to Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir, casting doubts over exit polls, which have predicted opposition INDIA bloc’s win.

Paswan, whose Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) is part of the BJP-led coalition, spoke to journalists here hours before commencement of counting of votes in the northern state and the Union territory.

The counting of votes for the Baramulla assembly constituency, one of the 90 seats in the Jammu and Kashmir legislature, will begin at 8 am today. The constituency, also part of the parliamentary seat, voted in the second phase of the election, which took place on October 1.
