Jammu Kashmir Election Result 2024 Updates: J&K has flourished after Article 370 abrogation, says PM Modi

National Conference (NC) leaders Abdul Rahim Rather and Ali Mohammad Sagar were elected for a record seventh term on Tuesday in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections.

Rather, the former finance minister of the erstwhile state of J-K, has represented central Kashmir's Chrar-i-Shareef for six terms before this since 1977. He was elected to the assembly in 1983, 1987, 1996, 2002 and 2008 elections. In 2014 polls, he lost to PDP's Ghulam Nabi Lone.

The Awami Ittehad Party led by Sheikh Abdul Rashid alias Engineer Rashid, who proved a giant slayer after he defeated former chief minister Omar Abdullah in the 2024 parliamentary elections, has failed to make much impact in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly polls.

Rashid, who won while incarcerated in Tihar Jail on terror funding charges, attempted to demonstrate that his parliamentary win was not merely a fluke. However, he failed to strike a chord with the voters in the first assembly polls after the abrogation of Article 370.

Addressing party workers at BJP headquarters in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said "In J&K, its (Congress) allies were already worried that they were suffering losses because of Congress and today's results have shown the same. You must remember that we saw the same thing in the election results as well. In Lok Sabha, half of the seats won by Congress were because of their allies. Apart from this, where the allies trusted Congress, the boat of those allies sank. In many states, the allies of Congress had to bear the brunt of Congress's poor performance. Congress is such a parasitic party that swallows its allies. Congress wants to make such a country where people hate their own heritage, doubt their national institutions, wants to tarnish the image of everything that the countrymen are proud of. Whether it is the country's Election Commission, the country's police, the country's judiciary, Congress wants to tarnish every institution."

Addressing party workers in Delhi, PM Modi said, "For some time now, many conspiracies are being hatched against India. Many conspiracies are being hatched to weaken India's democracy and social fabric. International conspiracies are being hatched. National parties like Congress and their allies are involved in this game. Today Haryana has given a befitting reply to every such conspiracy. Every Indian will have to take a pledge that we will not let any such conspiracy succeed. India will not deviate from the path of development.

"When was the last time when a Congress government retained power? Around 13 years ago, in 2011, their government had retained power in Assam. Following this, people have never given Congress a second term in any state," says PM Modi addressing BJP workers at party headquarters in New Delhi.

Congress considers power as its birthright. When not in government, the condition of Congress becomes like a fish without water.

In the next day or two, I would the party president to call the legislative party, which will elect its leader and then the alliance will elect its leader," said National Conference leader Omar Abdullah

Seven independent candidates have emerged victorious in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly polls, marking an increase from the 2014 elections when three such candidates had won.

Satesh Sharma, who left the Congress and contested as an independent from the Chhamb seat of Jammu region, won the election by defeating BJP candidate Rajeev Sharma with a margin of 6,929 votes.

In Inderwal, independent candidate Payare Lal Sharma defeated veteran leader Gulam Mohammad Saroori by a narrow margin of 643 votes. In Bani, independent candidate Dr Rameshwar Singh defeated BJP nominee and former MLA Jewan Lal by 2,048 votes. Singh secured 18,672 votes, while Lal polled 16,624 votes.

In the Surankote assembly segment, independent candidate and National Conference rebel Choudhary Mohammad Akram defeated Congress' Mohammad Shahnawaz by a margin of 8,851 votes.

Muzaffar Iqbal Khan won the Thanamandi seat with a margin of 6,179 votes against BJP candidate Mohmmad Iqbal Malik. Khursheed Ahmed Sheikh secured 25,984 votes and defeated Peoples Conference's Irfan Sultan Panditpuri by a margin of 1,602 votes in the Langate assembly seat.

Shabir Ahmed Kullay defeated National Conference candidate Sheikh Mohmmad Rafi by a margin of 1,207 votes in the Shopian seat.

PM Modi had promised peaceful elections in J&K, which witnessed transparent polls for first time since advent of terrorism, said Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

BJP candidate Devender Rana won from Nagrota segment with the highest margin while the PDP's Tral candidate Rafiq Ahmad Naik had the lowest margin for victory in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections whose results were declared on Tuesday.

Rana, who had won the 2014 assembly elections on the National Conference (NC) ticket, retained the Nagrota seat on BJP ticket by a margin of 30,472 votes. His nearest rival, NC's Joginder Singh, got 17,641 votes

Results are in for 77 out of 90 Assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir.

BJP candidate Arvind Gupta, who won from the Jammu West Assembly constituency, has said he will fulfil the promises that he has made to the people. “I express my gratitude to the people for the love and support they have given me,” he said.

PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti congratulated the NC-Congress alliance for their outstanding performance in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. She also congratulated the people of Jammu and Kashmir for voting for a stable government.

"I think the people wanted a stable government and they thought that National Conference-Congress could give that and keep BJP away," she said.

For AAP, the results from Jammu and Kashmir bring great news, said party leader Sanjay Singh. “Our young leader, Mehraj Malik, has won in the remote area of Doda. AAP is very happy that the movement of the party is reaching different parts of the country. I believe the model we have in Delhi and Punjab will now be discussed in Jammu and Kashmir as well,” he said.

Referring to NC's decision to form an alliance with Congress, National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah said, “It was very good decision, we stand with India and we don't stand alone.”

“If the state has to progress, we've to stand with the rest of the nation, so that we could remove the tragedies that have occurred in these 10 years,” he added.

NC leader and former minister Sakina Masood won her third assembly election from D H Pora seat in Jammu and Kashmir, defeating her PDP rival Gulzar Ahmad Dar by over 17,000 votes.

Mehraj Malik earned the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) its first-ever poll win in Jammu and Kashmir by winning the Doda constituency. He beat his nearest rival, BJP’s Gajay Singh Rana, by more than 4,700 votes.

National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah has announced that NC’s vice president Omar Abdullah will be the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

"People have given their mandate, they have proven that they don't accept the decision that was taken on August 5. Omar Abdullah will be the chief minister," he said.

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah has won the Budgam seat, according to the Election Commission. He defeated PDP's Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi by a margin of over 18,485 votes.

He is also leading on the Ganderbal seat by over 7,000 votes.

National Conference leader Tanvir Sadiq has been declared as winner from Zadibal Assembly constituency.

JKNC President Farooq Abdullah met party workers at his residence in Srinagar.

The National Conference-Congress alliance is likely to form government in Jammu and Kashmir with poll trends showing the combine ahead in 51 of the 90 seats while the BJP was leading in 28.

NC vice president Omar Abdullah is leading by more than 14,000 votes in Budgam assembly segment after eleven rounds of counting, while he has a lead of over 5,000 votes in Ganderbal seat.

JKNC candidate from Khanyar seat, Ali Mohammad Sagar, said that people have reposed the faith in National Conference. National Conference has always done politics of principles, he said, adding that there is no fight for CM post in the party.

National Conference leader Salman Sagar has won Hazratbal seat in Jammu and Kashmir by defeating PDP's Asiea Naqash by a margin of 10,295 votes.

Jammu and Kashmir National Conference leader Nazir Ahmad Khan has won Gurez (ST) seat in Jammu and Kashmir by defeating BJP's Faqeer Mohammad Khan by a margin of 1,132 votes.

BJP candidate from Basohli thanked the people from his constituency after maintaining a comfortable lead from the seat. “I thank the people of Basohli as I have a lead of 12,000 votes. They want change, and are ready to go with BJP and PM Modi,” he said.

He has won from the seat by defeating Congress' Lal Singh by a margin of 16,034 votes.

NC candidate from Gurez Assembly, Nazir Ahmad, thanked people who worked hard for the Assembly polls. “This defeat is of PM Modi not just of BJP,” he said.

BJP workers in Jammu burst crackers to celebrate the party's lead in the region as per election trends.

BJP's Darshan Kumar has won the Basohli Assembly seat by defeating Congress' Lal Singh by a margin of 16,034 votes, according to the Election Commission.

Jammu and Kashmir BJP co-incharge Ashish Sood said that the results are yet to be announced and BJP will give a strong government to the public of Jammu and Kashmir.

“As many as 10-12 rounds of counting is to be done on several seats, and there will be big turnarounds. But, on seats where we are ahead, we have taken decisive lead,” he said.

Speaking to reporters, Karra said that he always knew that the alliance will cross the 50-mark in J&K. "I am still hoping that the final results will be accordingly," he said. He also reacted to the controversy around the powers of LG to nominate 5 MLAs.

"This (nomination of 5 MLA seats by LG) is pre-meditated, pre-conceived, pre-poll rigging. This is totally unconstitutional and undemocratic - it is an insult to popular mandate," he said. Notably, Karra is leading from the Central Shalteng Assembly constituency by a margin of 9758 votes.

As per the latest EC trends, National Conference is ahead in 41 seats while its ally Congress is leading in 10. The BJP has leads in 26 seats. The majority mark is 46. If the trends hold, then NC-Congress may end up forming the first government in the Union Territory since the abrogation of Article 370.

BJP's Darshan Kumar is all set to win the Basohli constituency in Jammu, dealing a blow to Congress candidate Lal Singh. Lal Singh had won the constituency in 2014 as a BJP candidate.

In the previous assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, BJP had won 25 seats in the Valley - all of them from the Jammu region. This time too, the party is currently ahead in 25 seats. However, since 2014, Jammu's representation in the assembly has gone up to 43 from 37 earlier.

The National Conference leader said that he is sitting in the lawn quietly watching the results unfold.

Iltija Mufti, who was fighting her first election, has conceded defeat from Bijbehara in a post on X. "I accept the verdict of the people. The love & affection I received from everyone in Bijbehara will always stay with me. Gratitude to my PDP workers who worked so hard throughout this campaign," she said. National Conference leader Bashir Ahmad Shah Veeri is ahead in the constituency

Omar Abdullah, who is leading from both his seats, posted a selfie on X and hoped for an opposite of the Lok Sabha result in the ongoing assembly elections. "Counting day 7K done. Last time around it didn’t end well for me personally. InshaAllah this time around it will be better," he said.

In the 2014 Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, PDP emerged as the single largest party after winning 28 seats. However, it is currently just ahead in 5 constituencies as per the latest EC trends. If the trends hold, this will be a big setback for the Mehbooba Mufti led party which was hoping for a revival. Moreover, Mufti's daughter Iltija is also currently trailing.

If the National Conference-Congress alliance falls short of majority in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, then they may have to rely on the support from Independents and smaller parties to form the government in the Valley.

In Budgam, the National Conference vice president is ahead of PDP rival by a margin of 7,270 votes. In Ganderbal, he is leading his PDP rival by a margin of 4,658 votes. Notably, Omar Abdullah had suffered a big setback in the recent Lok Sabha polls when he lost the Baramulla seat to Engineer Rashid.

According to the Election Commission figures so far, BJP's vote share is at 26.57% while NC's vote share is at 23.4%. Congress is a distant third with nearly 13% vote share. However, the combined vote share of Congress and NC is far above BJP's. Congress and National Conference are contesting the election as part of the INDIA bloc.

The National Conference-Congress alliance is now losing its commanding lead in Jammu and Kashmir as counting of vote progresses. The NC-Congress is now ahead in 47 seats as per Election Commission trends. The majority mark is 46.

In Jammu, Congress candidate from Bahu Assembly seat, TS Tony said that the Congress-NC alliance was all set to form the government.

Congress-NC alliance is going to form the government with two-third majority, he said, adding that people know everything now. “This was the city of temples. BJP made it the city of liquors. They say that it is for revenue generation. The people are frustrated with the liquor and land mafia...They are exposed now," he said.

BJP’s Kuldeep Raj Dubey is leading in Reasi constituency, as per the latest update from Election Commission.

According to the latest Election Commission data, the JKNC-Congress alliance has crossed the majority mark.

Jammu & Kashmir National Conference candidate Abdul Majeed Bhat is leading in Anantnag West with a margin of over 2,000 votes.

Congress candidate from Jammu South Raman Bhalla said that the Congress-NC alliance is going to form the government in J&K.

“In J&K, the alliance is going to form the govt, we had anticipated it earlier itself because we saw the crowd during public rallies, it showed how much people were sad between 2014 and 2024,” he said.

PDP's Iltija Mufti is trailing in the Srigufwara-Bijbehara constituency. Jammu and Kashmir National Conference leader Bashir Ahmad Shah Veeri is ahead on the seat.

Jammu & Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party’s Mehboob Beg is leading from the Anantnag assembly constituency.

The constituency went to polls in the first phase of elections on September 18.

Official Election Commission trends have come in for 71 of the 90 Assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir.

Congress’ Ghulam Ahmad Mir is currently leading from the Dooru Assembly constituency. There is a strong anti-incumbency wave against BJP, he said, adding that the Congress-NC alliance will cross the 50 mark in the 90-member Jammu and Kashmir assembly.

BJP’s Devender Singh Rana is currently leading from Nagrota assembly constituency.

National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah has said that his party is hopeful of victory in the recent Assembly polls. “We are hopeful of victory, rest is on God. Whatever the voters of J&K have decided will be clear by afternoon. If the mandate is against the BJP, it should not resort to gambling,” he said.

According to the Election Commission, BJP's Mohan Lal is currently leading from the Akhnoor assembly constituency.

With counting of votes underway, official Election Commission trends show BJP candidate from Jammu North constituency Sham Lal Sharma leading.

Counting for all 90 Assembly seats began at 8 am today.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National Spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari on Tuesday said that the results of the elections would clear the formation of a pro-development government in Jammu and Kashmir and further added that the win of BJP would be a historic win in the state.

Speaking to ANI, Bhandari said "The results of the elections would form a pro-development state in Jammu and Kashmir. The win of BJP in Jammu and Kashmir would be a historic win. We are very confident of winning in Haryana as well. Internal feedbacks have indicated that BJP would make a clear win in Haryana."

With postal ballots indicating a close fight in Jammu and Kashmir, the BJP is looking to cobble a coalition in the union territory, TV reports cited sources as saying.

As per early trends, National Conference (NC) vice president Omar Abdullah is leading from both the seats he is contesting on -- Budgam and Ganderbal.

The first trends are here and Congress-NC alliance is currently leading in 10 seats out of the 90 constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir. As of now, postal ballots are being counted.

BJP candidate from Akhnoor Assembly seat, Mohan Lal Bhagat, has said that BJP will emerge as the single largest party in Jammu and Kashmir.

This time it will be the BJP government in J&K and the CM will also be from BJP, he said.

The fate of 873 candidates, vying for a seat in the 90-member house, has been sealed and it will be known by evening today.

The prominent among those in the fray are National Conference leader Omar Abdullah, who is contesting from Budgam and Ganderbal segments; Sajad Gani Lone of People's Conference who is contesting from Handwara and Kupwara seats; Pradesh Congress Committee president Tariq Hamid Karra, who is a candidate from Batamaloo seat; and BJP state president Ravindra Raina, who is contesting from Nowshera seat.

The other notable contestants are AICC general secretary Ghulam Ahmad Mir (Dooru), PDP leaders Waheed Para (Pulwama), Iltija Mufti (Bijbehara), Apni Party president Altaf Bukhari (Chanapora), CPI(M) veteran Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami (Kulgam) and former deputy chief ministers Muzaffar Hussain Baig and Tara Chand.

Awami Ittehad Party chief Sheikh Abdul Rashid said irrespective of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly election results, the Union Territory's control will lie with Delhi.

Rashid, popularly known as Engineer Rashid, also said he does not rely on exit polls and would wait for the final outcome of the assembly polls.

"Everybody is at liberty to have an exit poll. They know better what the criteria were. People have voted, so let's wait for October 8," Rashid told PTI.

Jammu and Kashmir BJP chief and candidate from Nowshera Assembly, Ravinder Raina on Tuesday exuded confidence in BJP's victory in the Union Territory and said that the party will win 30-35 seats.

"We are confident that BJP and its supporting parties will win the elections with full majority...We will win 30-35 seats," he said.

Ahead of the counting of votes, Congress leader Ghulam Ahmad Mir said that BJP has no scope to form the government.

“As per the local trends we are receiving from Anantnag and Kashmir, the result would be in favour of the Congress-NC alliance and other like-minded parties,” he said.

However, these are early trends and will get more clear with time, he added.

Ahead of the counting of votes in Jammu and Kashmir, stringent security arrangements have been put in place at all district quarters in Jammu and Kashmir.

As per an Election Commission official, a three-tier security set up has been put in place at all the 20 counting centres across Jammu and Kashmir where the votes will be counted.

Only authorised counting agents of the contesting candidates and staff posted on counting duty will be allowed inside the counting halls, the official said.

On Monday, All India Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge expressed confidence that his party will come to power in Haryana and that, together with its alliance partner National Conference, they will form the government in Jammu and Kashmir.

Several exit polls have predicted a clear majority for the Congress in Haryana and gave an edge to its alliance with the National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir, with the regional partner emerging as the single largest party.

In Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Electoral Officer PK Pole said CCTVs have been set up in each counting hall for record creation.

"Counting will begin at 7:30 am for postal ballots and 8 am for EVMs... Polls were held peacefully and no candidate or political party faced any kind of difficulty. Violence-free public participation was witnessed," Pole told ANI.

This election marks the first since Jammu and Kashmir lost its statehood in 2019. The Union Territory recorded a voter turnout of nearly 64 percent across three phases, held on September 18, 25, and October 1. Today, the counting of votes for the 90-member Assembly begins at 8 a.m., setting the stage for the formation of a new government in J&K.

Exit polls suggest that Jammu and Kashmir is likely heading towards a hung assembly, with no single party expected to secure a clear majority. The predictions indicate a closely contested race among the major parties. However, some exit polls have forecasted that the National Conference-Congress alliance could potentially emerge victorious, securing a significant number of seats in the assembly.

The counting of votes for the 90 Assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., marking the final step in an electoral process that will bring back an elected government after six years. This election is being closely watched as the results will determine the political direction of the Union Territory, which has been under central rule since 2018.

For the BJP, strong results could solidify its momentum, potentially boosting the party’s confidence as it seeks to maintain or expand its influence in states where it faces stiff competition. Congress, on the other hand, is looking to regain ground. Any positive results today could rejuvenate the party and its alliances, giving it a much-needed boost as it positions itself as the primary alternative to the BJP in the next round of state elections in Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Delhi.

The counting of votes for the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections will commence at 8 am today and the initial trends are likely to emerge by midday. Poll officials along with agents representing political parties are likely to arrive at the counting centres by 5 am. Elections for all the 90 assembly constituencies were held in three phases on September 18, September 25 and October 1.

The counting process will commence with the postal ballots. Following this, the votes cast using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be counted. Early trends are expected to come by midday today while more concrete figures are likely to emerge by early evening.

The J&K elections are significant as they are the first since the revocation of Article 370 in August 2019, which led to the bifurcation of the former state into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. The National Conference and Congress entered the elections as a coalition, while the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) contested independently.

In Jammu and Kashmir, exit polls placed the Congress-National Conference (NC) alliance at a better position, with the BJP predicted to emerge as the largest party in the Jammu region.

Five persons to be nominated by the L-G as members of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly may play a crucial role in the formation of the next government. The Congress, National Conference and the PDP have threatened to move the Supreme Court.

According to a C-Voter survey, National Conference leader Omar Abdullah emerged as the most preferred choice for the next Jammu and Kashmir CM. J&K BJP president Ravinder Raina emerged as the second most preferred choice, with 12.1 percent of the votes.

National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah said on Monday that his party would welcome support from Mehbooba Mufti's PDP even if it isn’t required to form a government. Mufti's PDP has also expressed willingness to back the Congress-NC alliance.
