India observes Jawaharlal Nehru’s birth anniversary every year on 14 November. The day is celebrated across the country as Children’s Day, honouring the nation’s first Prime Minister and his deep affection for children.
Nehru’s Life and ContributionBorn on 14 November 1889 in Allahabad (now Prayagraj), Uttar Pradesh, Jawaharlal Nehru was the son of Motilal Nehru and Swarup Rani Nehru. Educated at Harrow School and Trinity College, Cambridge, he later studied law at the Inner Temple in London. After returning to India, Nehru joined the Indian National Congress and played a key role in India’s struggle for independence.
A close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru emerged as one of the leading figures in the freedom movement. He was imprisoned several times for participating in the national struggle against British rule. After independence in 1947, he became the first Prime Minister of India and served until his death in 1964.

Under his leadership, India saw the establishment of key institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), and the Atomic Energy Commission. He also worked on major projects like the Bhakra Nangal Dam, calling such developments the “temples of modern India”.
He emphasised education, science, and secularism, shaping the foundation of the newly independent nation. His foreign policy was based on non-alignment, promoting peaceful coexistence and cooperation among countries.
‘Chacha Nehru’ and Children’s DayJawaharlal Nehru was fondly called ‘Chacha Nehru’ by children. He believed that children were the real strength and future of the country. To express his love and concern for their welfare, 14 November is celebrated as Children’s Day (Bal Diwas) in India. On this day, schools and educational institutions organise various cultural programmes, essay competitions, and activities highlighting Nehru’s life and his affection for children.
Legacy and RemembranceNehru passed away on 27 May 1964, leaving behind a lasting legacy as one of India’s most influential leaders. His efforts in nation building and his vision for a democratic and progressive India continue to inspire generations.
