The District Collector of Chennai, Rashmi Siddharth Zagade, has announced a holiday for all schools in Chennai today due to the forecast of heavy rainfall across the state. This decision comes after an alert from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which has predicted intense rain in several regions of Tamil Nadu.

The IMD issued a warning for heavy rain over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, and Villuppuram districts. The Union Territory of Puducherry and its Karaikal region are also expected to experience similar weather conditions today.

The weather forecast indicates that Tamil Nadu, along with neighbouring areas like Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, and Mahe, will likely experience mild to moderate rainfall with isolated thunderstorms and lightning until 14 November. However, more severe rainfall is anticipated in isolated parts of Tamil Nadu from 11 to 15 November, coastal Andhra Pradesh from 12 to 14 November, and Kerala from 13 to 16 November. Coastal and South Interior Karnataka may also see heavy rain on 14 November.

According to IMD updates, a low-pressure system is forming over the southwest Bay of Bengal, which is expected to move toward Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka in the coming days. This is anticipated to bring intensified rainfall, particularly to Chennai and its surrounding districts, including Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpet. Rainfall in these areas may range from 6 cm to 12 cm in isolated locations within a 24-hour period up to 15 November.
