Rishikesh, Uttarakhand

A 25-year-old civil services aspirant from Assam’s Dima Hasao district has been reported missing in Rishikesh, with police suspecting she may have drowned in the Ganga. Rosmita Hojai had travelled to Delhi for a railway recruitment exam before heading to Uttarakhand with two friends, where she vanished under mysterious circumstances.

According to TOI, Hojai arrived in Rishikesh on June 6 with two male companions, Hemant Sharma from Haryana, a former classmate, and another friend. The trio had planned a camping trip in Shivpuri, but by evening, her friends reported her missing. A local resident claimed to have seen a woman drowning near the campsite, prompting fears that Hojai may have been swept away.

Haridwar police have deployed State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) divers to search the river, but no body has been recovered so far. SHO Pradeep Chauhan was quoted by TOI as saying, "We fear she may have drowned... but nothing can be confirmed until a body is found." Investigators are also probing possible suicide, though no evidence has yet substantiated the claim.

Meanwhile, Hojai’s family in Assam filed a separate missing report at Haflong police station after losing contact with her on June 6. Her mother, Solmodi Hojai, stated that her daughter had travelled alone for the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) exam in Delhi.

Disturbingly, the family received two calls the next morning - one from an unidentified number where the caller, claiming to be a Uttarakhand police officer, alleged that Rosmita had died by suicide. Authorities are working to verify the caller’s identity and the claim’s legitimacy.
