A joyride turned into a nightmare at an amusement park in Chennai on Tuesday. A group of 36 people that included children was stranded mid-air for over three hours after a ride named ‘Top Gun’ broke down on Tuesday evening.

The amusement park located along the East Coast Road near the Tamil Nadu capital saw frantic rescue work after nearly three hours of ordeal. An NDTV report said that The technical glitch in one of the engines led to the malfunctioning of the ride as it stopped working with people stranded at a height of 50 feet.

After the rescue, a visibly traumatised man said he used Instagram to send out an SOS. Talking to PTI, district fire officer Loganathan said that initially, they tried to bring down the people stranded mid-air using ladders.

However, the ladder proved to be deterrent and the rescuers realised that they will not be able to bring down the people safely from such a height. Later, two sky lifts were pressed into action to bring each individual one by one.

The officials said that none of the individuals suffered any injury during nearly two-hour-long rescue mission. There were 16 women and 20 men who were trapped mid-air, the officials added.
