A man died in Punjab’s Firozepur district on Monday after a loaded pistol tucked into his waistband accidentally went off as he was getting up from a sofa. The victim, identified as Harpinder Singh alias Sonu, was a Non-Resident Indian who had recently moved to Dhani Sucha Singh village.
According to a report by NDTV, police said Harpinder had been sitting on a sofa with a relative when the weapon suddenly went off as he stood up, with the bullet striking him in the stomach. The incident was recorded on the home’s CCTV cameras.
The footage shows family members rushing to help Harpinder after the gunshot and guiding him out of the room. He was taken to a government hospital, where doctors referred him to another facility, but he died while being transported to Bathinda.
His body was sent for a post-mortem examination. Station House Officer Ravinder Sharma of Sadar police station recorded the statement of Harpinder’s father, Darshan Singh, and, after initiating proceedings under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), released the body to the family.
Harpinder, who had recently returned from abroad and was newly married, is survived by his two-year-old daughter, the report added. His funeral was held on Tuesday and was attended by a large number of villagers, along with members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), who came to pay their respects.
