A 90-year-old man from Bihar’s Muzaffarpur has accused his son of declaring him dead on paper to illegally sell their ancestral property. Raj Narayan Thakur, walking with the help of a stick, approached the district magistrate’s office seeking justice on Saturday, NDTV reported.
Thakur alleged that his fifth son, 44-year-old Dilip Thakur, fraudulently sold a portion of their ancestral land in Mahmadpur village for Rs 2 lakh. The land, which has not been formally divided, is still registered in the name of Thakur’s late father, Methura Thakur, and belongs jointly to Thakur and his two brothers, Ramjinish and Rampukar.
In his written complaint, Thakur stated that the family had only a verbal understanding about the land’s separation, with no legal demarcation carried out. Despite this, Dilip allegedly sold the property without his knowledge or consent, presenting a sale deed that falsely declared him dead.
Thakur presented the sale deed as proof, showing that the transaction was conducted at the Motipur Registry Office between Dilip Thakur and a buyer named Suman Saurabh. He claimed no physical verification of the land was done by the registry office before approving the sale.
"He (Dilip) sold this land for Rs 2 lakh at the Motipur Registry Office by declaring me dead in the land records, despite me being alive and no physical land verification was done by the registry office, Motipur. This fraudulent activity has been carried out without my knowledge, consent, or any legal authority, causing me immense mental distress and financial loss," the complainant said.
The elderly man has demanded two immediate actions: immediate investigation into the illegal sale and strict legal action against those involved in this fraudulent registration; cancel or freeze the illegal transfer/registry of his share of ancestral land made under the pretenses, according to the NDTV report.
Thakur also alleged that his son is an alcoholic and has previously sold several properties "under the influence of bad habits." Thakur, emotionally shattered by the incident, said that nobody in the family checks on him, neither for food nor clothing. He now hopes justice is delivered and his "rightful property is protected."
District Magistrate Subrat Kumar Sen has directed Circle Officer concerned and Station House Officer concerned to investigate the matter.
