In the invoice dated November 1, the society imposed a Rs 5,000 fine on him and his flatmate for allowing girls to stay overnight. The management even specified the date of the alleged violation and the number of women who stayed.

A Bengaluru resident revealed that he and his flatmate were fined Rs 5,000 by their residential society for allowing “girls to stay overnight” at their apartment. Sharing a screenshot of the invoice issued by the society on Reddit, he asked whether any legal action could be taken against the management.

In his post, he explained that the society has a rule prohibiting bachelors from having overnight guests, a restriction that does not apply to families living in the community.

Unfair Treatment of Bachelors in Society. Is there anything we can do to get fair treatment?

“Basically our society has a rule that bachelors are not allowed to have guests overnight but no restriction for family. We pay the same maintenance and everything,” he said.

In the invoice dated November 1, the society imposed a Rs 5,000 fine on him and his flatmate for allowing girls to stay overnight. The management even specified the date of the alleged violation and the number of women who stayed.

“Two girls stayed overnight,” read the comment on the invoice, mentioning that the infraction occurred on October 31.

Further asking for advice, the man wrote, “this is like the first violation and I didn't even get a warning. I know it's too small of an issue but it doesn't feel nice to be treated inferiorly. Even though there is no big legal action I can take, can I do anything meaningful so that they will reconsider this?”

Redditors react to Bengaluru society fine

Several Reddit users responded to the bachelor’s predicament, with many pointing out that while legal action against the society might be possible, it may not be worth the effort.

Some advised him to consider moving to a different place, while others encouraged him to publicly name the society so that other bachelors could avoid similar issues.

Reacting to the post, one said, "This s*** isn’t enforceable, and if you had a lot of money and time, you could take them to court. Unfortunately, you probably don’t have the time or money for that - so the actionable thing you probably should do is find a new place to live. I’ve been renting for almost 15 years (11 different places) all over north and central Bangalore and never had to deal with this s***. So jsut keep looking, no point compromising and staying in places like this.
