RNAIPL will now be fully consolidated in Renault Group’s financial statements.

Renault Group today announced the acquisition of Nissan’s 51 percent stake in their joint Chennai plant, Renault Nissan Automotive India Pvt Ltd (RNAIPL), thus becoming its sole owner.

RNAIPL will now be fully consolidated in Renault Group’s financial statements.

The development comes following the appointment of Stephane Deblaise as Renault Group CEO in India, effective September 1.

The company is aiming to strengthen its sales in the Indian market, which is the third largest in the world in terms of passenger vehicle (PV) volumes, and also expand its exports.

Renault has had an underwhelming performance over the past few years in the domestic market. From 78,926 units in FY23, its PV volumes declined to 45,439 units in FY24. A further drop to 37,900 units was witnessed in FY25.

The company only has three models in its portfolio — Kwid hatchback, Kiger SUV and Triber MPV.

However, it recently launched the new version of the Triber, the first model in a product offensive that will include four new vehicles.

Renault also jointly owns an engineering centre in India with Nissan to develop vehicles for both domestic and international markets.

RNAIPL will continue to produce Nissan vehicles for domestic and export markets. Among the Nissan vehicles currently produced at the facility are Magnite SUV and Sunny sedan.

Even Nissan is gearing up to strengthen its portfolio with two new models, a 7-seater MPV and a 5-seater SUV. Both will be produced at RNAIPL.

"India is a key market for Renault Group. Over the past 14 years, we have successfully established the Renault brand thanks to our dedicated teams and partners, reaching peak sales of over 1,00,000 vehicles sold per year. India also plays a vital role in our global R&D footprint. With full ownership of our plant in Chennai, we now have all the means to accelerate in India,” said Francois Provost, CEO, Renault Group.

“Stephane Deblaise, with his strong international experience and deep knowledge across our entire value chain, is ideally positioned to design and implement our strategy in the region,” he added.

RNAIPL started operations in 2010. It has an annual installed production capacity of 4,80,000 units. It is currently dedicated to vehicles based on CMF-A and CMF-A+ platforms.

Since 2010, RNAIPL has produced over 28,00,000 units, including 12,00,000 units for export markets. It has also produced over 46,00,000 engines and gearboxes.
