Mercedes-Benz has marked a major production milestone with the rollout of the 600,000th G-Class from its factory in Graz, Austria. The landmark vehicle, a G 580 with EQ Technology finished in Obsidian Black metallic, symbolises the enduring legacy and popularity of the iconic off-roader, often celebrated as the “best off-road vehicle in the world.”
First launched in 1979, the G-Class has consistently combined a butch design with outstanding off-road capabilities, creating a global fan following over more than four decades. Alongside the S-Class and E-Class, it stands as one of the longest-running passenger car model series in Mercedes-Benz history.
Limited editions have long been a part of the G-Class narrative, including the recent Edition Stronger Than The 1980s and earlier tributes such as the 500,000th-anniversary model. These special series pay homage to the original W 460 series, which gained fame in the 1980s and established the model's reputation for versatility both on and off the road.
Over the years, the G-Class has been defined by its personalisation aspect. Since 2019, the Manufaktur program has offered customers a plethora of customisation options. In 2024, the range expanded further, enabling buyers to select from up to 20,000 paint schemes, including heritage shades and exclusive finishes.
Despite evolving from its roots as a rugged commercial vehicle to a coveted lifestyle product, the G-Class has maintained its signature characteristics. Key features such as all-wheel drive, differential locks, and a robust ladder frame remain central to its appeal, while design elements like round headlights and the side-hinged rear door connect every model to the original G-Class.
Mercedes-Benz AG continues its focus on global operations, producing more than 2.4 million passenger cars and vans in 2024. The company is expanding its network of over 30 production sites and investing heavily in electric mobility, with the G 580 EQ, being one of the flagship products.
