Mahindra XEV 9S: More details out ahead of November 27 launch as carmaker targets another EV with over 500km range

The Mahindra XEV 9S gets an all-black cabin layout.

Mahindra & Mahindra is gearing up to introduce the new XEV 9S electric SUV in India. Ahead of the launch on November 27, the carmaker has started dropping teasers of its third born electric vehicle (BEV), revealing important details about the 7-seater model.

For reference, Mahindra's other two BEVs -- the BE 6 and the XEV 9e -- are 5-seater models. Both were launched in November 2024 and have cumulatively crossed the sales milestone of 30,000 units, strengthening the company's position in the nascent passenger EV space in the country.

Mahindra has shared at least two teasers of the XEV 9S on social media, hinting at rather plush interiors of the electric SUV. The vehicle gets the triple screen layout (instrument cluster, infotainment system and co-passenger display) like the XEV 9e, as well as the two-spoke steering wheel having an illuminated logo and the fixed glass panoramic roof. The centre console layout is, more or less, similar as well.

The new-age SUVs of Mahindra, be it internal combustion engine (ICE) models or electric models, are loaded to the gills with features. The new XEV 9S seems to follow the trend. We also know that it gets a Harman Kardon sound system, ventilated seats and powered seats with memory function.

Being a BEV, the XEV 9S shares the INGLO skateboard architecture with the BE 6 and the XEV 9e. The INGLO platform allows the XEV 9S to have a flat-floor design and more space inside the cabin with enhanced flexibility. The XEV 9S gets sliding second-row seats for better legroom.

While the BE 6 and the XEV 9e have a couple of battery pack options -- 59kWh and 79kWh -- a bigger battery pack for the XEV 9S can't be ruled out.

The BE 6 and the XEV 9e easily deliver an overall range (city + highway) of over 500km on a single full charge. We expect the XEV 9S to go beyond 600km, and that would really be interesting, as very few EVs in India currently have that kind of range capability. Besides, we are not ruling out an all-wheel-drive version.

Well, there is no doubt that the XEV 9S will be Mahindra's most capable EV to date. More details will come out closer to the launch.

If we talk about the price, the BE 6 sits between Rs 18,90,000 and Rs 28,54,000 (ex-showroom) and the XEV 9e in the range of Rs 21,90,000 to Rs 31,25,000 (ex-showroom). Being more premium, the range-topping XEV 9S could be priced above Rs 31,25,000 (ex-showroom).
