Google Maps now has weather forecasts

August 23, 2011 / 11:54 IST

Google, in a blog post, has announced its tie up with Weather.com and the US Naval Research Laboratory to bring weather information and cloud data on its Maps application. When you look up a certain city or area in Google maps, there will be an icon on the right corner for the widget that provides weather information. Users can see data like weather forecasts for the next four days, current humidity and wind conditions. Units of wind speed and temperature can be adjusted in the left hand panel and cloud viewing can be enabled or disabled when zooming out from the map. You can also tell if it's currently day or night in places by sun and moon icons.

The weather data on this new service is provided by weather.com and cloud data by the US Naval Research Laboratory. Google Maps also offers information on topography and traffic conditions in multiple locations. The idea behind having these features is to make travel and planning a lot easier as well as seeing what types of weather and traffic your friends and family around the world may be experiencing.

Would you look up weather forecasts in Google Maps or would you use the homepages of weather services like weather.com or AccuWeather? Let us know in the comments section below.
