Even while some states wouldn't allow Padmaavat's release, the film saw its way to what can be called a gung-ho start. The protests, violence and bans didn't stop Bhansali from minting money at the box office. The film has already clocked collections worth Rs56 crore at the weekend box office.
"Sales from paid previews on Wednesday second half and that from Friday and Saturday has already got the film Rs56 crore," said film trade analyst Atul Mohan.Mohan expects Padmaavat to make its official entry into the Rs100 crore club by Sunday afternoon.Call it the long weekend frenzy, or the hype or Bhansali's luck at the box office but Padmaavat, according to analysts, has made its initial grip in the market and the craze doesn't look like it would fade anytime soon."The movie has been getting positive reviews and people are finally accepting that there is nothing distasteful about the content. We are hoping the states that have had limited or no release would soon move from their decision and give theatre owners a go ahead to run Padmaavat," added Mohan.According to Mohan, the film should touch the Rs200 crore mark by the end of its first week's run at the theatres. The initial success of this Rs180 crore period drama, however, is not restricted to India only. According to numbers provided by Boxofficeindia, Padmaavat has set an all-time record in the US and Canada for the opening day with a business of Rs7.63 crore approximately. Bahubali - The Conclusion has had a higher number with close to Rs30.20 crore but that was in three languages with the Telugu version getting most of the business. The only other film to cross 1 million dollars (Rs6.7 crore approximately) in the US and Canada markets before this was Dhoom 3."The director has a strong following in the North American market with most of his films doing well since Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam in 1998," said Boxofficeindia in their analysis of the numbers achieved.Discover the latest Business News, Sensex, and Nifty updates.
