Zelensky urges Trump to broker Ukraine peace in call

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged US President Donald Trump to help broker peace in Ukraine during a phone call on Saturday, highlighting Trump’s recent success in the Middle East.

Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, confirmed the conversation in a Telegram post, stating, “President Zelensky is now speaking with President Trump,” without providing further details.

Following the call, Zelensky posted on X: “I had a call with US President Donald Trump—a very positive and productive one. I congratulated @POTUS on his success and the Middle East deal he was able to secure, which is an outstanding achievement. If a war can be stopped in one region, then surely other wars can be stopped as well—including the Russian war.”

"I informed President Trump about Russia’s attacks on our energy system—and I appreciate his willingness to support us. We discussed opportunities to bolster our air defense, as well as concrete agreements that we are working on to ensure this. There are good options and solid ideas on how to truly strengthen us," he further added.

The discussion comes amid escalating Russian attacks on Ukraine. On Friday, Moscow targeted Ukraine’s power grid, causing widespread blackouts across the country. By Saturday, electricity had been restored to over 800,000 residents in Kyiv, alleviating some of the immediate disruptions.

The call underscores Zelensky’s push for international support in mediating the conflict with Russia and reflects continued diplomatic engagement with global leaders to seek a resolution.

Relations between the two leaders have warmed dramatically since February, when they sparred during a now-infamous televised meeting at the White House.

Trump has since called Zelensky a "nice guy" and maintained support for Ukraine, which has been fighting a Russian invasion since 2022.

The two leaders previously met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York in September.
