The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) Intelligence Directorate has mandated Arabic language and Islamic studies training for all personnel in the intelligence division. According to the Jerusalem Post, this directive comes in response to intelligence failures linked to the events of October 7, 2023.
This new training initiative aims to enhance the analytical skills of intelligence personnel. By the end of next year, all AMAN staff (the Hebrew acronym for Israel's Military Intelligence Directorate) will complete Islamic Studies training, while 50 percent will also receive Arabic language instruction.
The directive comes from AMAN chief Major General Shlomi Binder.
Under this mandate, all intelligence personnel, including those in technical positions, are required to undergo training in either Arabic language or Islamic studies.
The program also includes specialized training in Houthi and Iraqi dialects, addressing challenges intelligence personnel have faced in interpreting Houthi communications. Reports note that the use of qat - a mild narcotic plant commonly chewed socially in Yemen and other Arab regions - impacts speech clarity, complicating understanding.
Under the new directive, all intelligence staff, including those in technical roles, must either learn Arabic or undergo Islamic studies training. This initiative aims to ensure future commanders are fluent in Arabic and possess a deep understanding of Islamic culture. By the end of next year, 100 percent of AMAN personnel will complete Islamic studies training, while 50 percent will be trained in Arabic.
Doron Kadosh, Army Radio’s military correspondent, revealed plans to create a dedicated department for Arabic and Islamic education. The program will emphasize Houthi and Iraqi dialects, reflecting growing regional intelligence demands.
Additionally, the IDF intends to reopen TELEM, a department that promoted Arabic and Middle Eastern studies in Israeli schools but was shut down six years ago due to budget cuts, which had led to a sharp decline in Arabic language study among personnel.
A senior Aman official said, “So far, we haven’t been strong in the areas of culture, language, and Islam, and we need to improve. We’re not aiming to turn our intelligence officers or soldiers into Arab villagers, but through focused language and cultural studies, we can equip them with the depth and understanding needed for sharper observation."
