Why the Epstein birthday book is back in the spotlight and what it means for Trump

A US congressional release of Jeffrey Epstein’s records adds fuel to a fight over a note linked to Donald Trump, while immigration enforcement in Los Angeles and Chicago triggers controversy.

Democrats on the House Oversight Committee published a redacted copy of Epstein’s 2003 “birthday book,” part of a larger tranche of estate documents. The book, filled with notes and drawings from Epstein’s circle, included a sexually suggestive sketch scrawled with “Donald.” Estate lawyers removed photos and names of women and minors to protect potential victims, but Democrats pointed to the entry as evidence that more needs to be disclosed, the New York Times reported.

The White House insists it is fake

The White House quickly dismissed the note and drawing, calling them fabricated. Trump aides posted recent autograph samples to highlight differences. Trump himself is suing the Wall Street Journal for defamation over earlier reporting on the sketch. Still, past letters Trump signed using only his first name — archived from the 1980s to early 2000s — show a “Donald” with a long tail on the final “d,” closely resembling the mark in Epstein’s book. That similarity is fuelling debate even as officials maintain the denial.

Other names and darker notes

The “birthday book” contains a mix of entries, from former President Bill Clinton’s note praising Epstein’s “childlike curiosity” to a crude drawing attributed to Victoria’s Secret founder Leslie Wexner. Clinton has denied knowledge of Epstein’s crimes. Other notes took a darker turn, including an entry describing recruitment by Ghislaine Maxwell for massages and another referencing a “girl sleeping on the floor,” accompanied by a childlike sketch.

Republican response and political fallout

Representative James Comer, the Oversight Committee’s Republican chairman, accused Democrats of cherry-picking and politicizing the files. He emphasized that Trump is not accused of wrongdoing. Vice President JD Vance also dismissed the uproar as a “fake scandal,” arguing Democrats were smearing the president. Still, the release satisfied earlier demands from sceptics who had insisted on seeing the original image.

Immigration rulings and operations the same day

On the same day, the Supreme Court lifted a district judge’s order restricting indiscriminate immigration-related stops in the Los Angeles area, a procedural victory for the administration. The ruling drew sharp dissent from the court’s liberal justices and condemnation from Los Angeles officials. In Chicago, the Department of Homeland Security announced “Operation Midway Blitz,” targeting undocumented immigrants with criminal records. Local reports cited only a handful of observed arrests but widespread anxiety in Latino neighbourhoods.

Why it matters now

The birthday book release revives scrutiny of Epstein’s network while exposing rifts over the Trump administration’s handling of related files. At the same time, immigration enforcement headlines underline the White House’s aggressive law-and-order push. With Democrats pressing for full disclosure and Republicans warning against politicization, both issues highlight the contested space where transparency, credibility and political power collide.
