The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) have claimed the discovery of a Hamas tunnel network beneath the European Hospital in Khan Yunis, Gaza, alleging it was used as a command-and-control center by senior Hamas operatives to coordinate attacks on Israeli forces.
In a post shared on Saturday via the social media platform X, the IDF released footage showing what it described as a sophisticated underground infrastructure.
The video shows multiple rooms reportedly containing weapons, intelligence materials, and operational equipment. The operation was conducted by the IDF’s 36th Division with support from the Intelligence Directorate, the Golani Brigade, the elite Yahalom engineering unit, and special forces, according to the Jerusalem Post.
"An underground tunnel route beneath the European Hospital in Khan Yunis, Gaza. In a special, targeted operation, IDF soldiers located an underground tunnel route containing numerous findings such as command and control rooms, weapons, and additional intelligence materials. Hamas continues to exploit hospitals in Gaza for terrorist purposes, cynically exploiting and endangering civilians," the IDF said.

This is not the first time the IDF has alleged the existence of Hamas infrastructure beneath medical facilities. In 2023, the Israeli military said it uncovered a Hamas tunnel beneath Gaza’s largest hospital, Al Shifa, which has since been heavily damaged in the ongoing conflict. Hamas and hospital staff have repeatedly denied these claims.
The conflict between Israel and Hamas started on October 7, 2023, after a deadly cross-border attack by Hamas left around 1,200 Israelis dead and dozens taken hostage. In response, Israel launched a prolonged military campaign in Gaza. According to health authorities in Gaza, over 54,000 Palestinians have been killed since the conflict began.
Although temporary ceasefires have allowed for limited exchanges of hostages and prisoners, the fighting resumed shortly after each truce. Since Israel resumed its offensive on March 18 following a brief ceasefire, Gaza officials report that at least 4,402 more people have died.
