Britain foreign minister David Lammy said on Saturday that his country is working with the United States (US) to ensure that the ceasefire between India and Pakistan lasts and that "confidence-building measures" and dialogue take place between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
Talking to Reuters in Pak capital Islamabad as he concluded his two-day visit, he said, "We will continue to work with the United States to ensure that we get an enduring ceasefire, to ensure that dialogue is happening and to work through with Pakistan and India how we can get to confidence and confidence-building measures between the two sides.”
When asked about India holding the Indus Water Treaty in abeyance — a move that could potentially squeezing Pakistan’s water supply, the Britain foreign minister said: "We would urge all sides to meet their treaty obligations."
In retaliation to Pahalgam terror attack, where Pak-harboured terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba's offshoot The Resistance Front (TRF) killed 26 innocent people in the Jammu and Kashmir town, India launched precision strikes under Operation Sindoor on May 7 to destroy nine terror hubs in Pakistan and Pak-occupied-Kashmir (PoK).
After this, Pak attempted to attack Indian military bases on May 8, 9 and 10, but all its aggressions were strongly responded to by the Indian side.
The Indian military targeted eight Pakistani air bases with missiles and other long-range weapons on May 10 in retaliation for Pakistan's attempts to strike 26 military facilities.
The hostilities ended with an understanding on stopping the military actions following talks between the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both sides on the afternoon of May 10.
India and Pakistan announced reaching an understanding to stop all firings and military actions on land, air and sea, with effect from 5 pm on Saturday.
On Monday, in his first address to the nation after Operation Sindoor, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Operation Sindoor has carved out a new benchmark in India's fight against terrorism, and set up a new parameter and a new normal. "Indian armed forces executed precise strikes on terrorist hideouts and training centres in Pakistan, delivering a decisive blow," he said.
