Two people, including a 10-year-old boy, were killed and three others injured after gunfire erupted on Chancellor Avenue in Newark, New Jersey, on Saturday evening. Police responded to reports of a shooting near Wainwright Street shortly before 7 p.m., according to the Essex County prosecutor’s office.

The 10-year-old boy and a 21-year-old woman were transported to University Hospital, where both were later pronounced dead, CBS News reported. Their names have not been released. Three others — an 11-year-old boy, a 19-year-old man and a 60-year-old man — were also wounded. All remained in stable condition as of Sunday morning, broadcaster WABC noted.

Authorities have not disclosed the circumstances that led to the shooting, and it remains unknown whether a suspect has been identified or apprehended. In an update on X, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy wrote: “Please pray for the victims and their families.”

Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka described Saturday as “a dark and devastating day in Newark,” adding: “We will not rest until there is justice for the parents and families left behind in unspeakable pain and grief. Newark will work tirelessly with the prosecutor’s office, state law-enforcement, and federal agencies to ensure justice is served. We urge the killer to turn himself in, as there is no safe place to hide.” He also said: “Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this trauma. Our prayers are with them – and our actions will support them,” CBS News reported.

Police cordoned off a large portion of Chancellor Avenue on Saturday night, collecting evidence including numerous shell casings marked by red evidence cups along the pavement. The prosecutor’s office confirmed that the investigation remains active and ongoing.

Earlier on Saturday, Newark authorities began probing a separate incident involving the death of a two-year-old boy who reportedly fell from a 20th-floor apartment window at around 7 a.m. The toddler was pronounced dead at the scene, located near a public park close to Newark Liberty International Airport, according to a statement from the Essex County prosecutor’s office. County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens and Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda have launched an investigation.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Tips Line on 1-877-847-7432. Anonymous tips are accepted, and a reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
