US President Donald Trump has confirmed he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15, 2025, in Alaska. Announcing the summit via Truth Social on Friday, Trump said the talks would focus on the ongoing war in Ukraine.
He also hinted that a potential resolution between Moscow and Kyiv could involve territorial concessions.
“The highly anticipated meeting between myself, as President of the United States of America, and President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska," Trump wrote in his post.
The announcement ends weeks of speculation over where the high-stakes meeting would take place. While earlier reports suggested that President Putin favored the United Arab Emirates as the venue, the US administration ultimately insisted on a domestic setting, choosing Alaska, citing both security and diplomatic priorities.
The two leaders are expected to address the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, as confirmed by Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov.
“The presidents themselves will undoubtedly focus on discussing options for achieving a long-term peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian crisis,” Ushakov stated in a message shared on Telegram.
Speaking to reporters at the White House ahead of his official announcement, President Trump hinted that a possible agreement could include “some swapping of territories,” though he provided no further specifics.
Some analysts, including those with connections to the Kremlin, believe Russia may be open to giving up control of areas it holds outside the four regions it officially claims to have annexed, according to the Associated Press.
Trump also noted that his meeting with Putin would take place before any potential talks involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He has previously stated he is open to meeting Putin regardless of whether the Russian leader agrees to engage with Zelenskyy.
The summit announcement followed an intense week of diplomatic activity involving the US, its European allies, and Russia.
