Tesla chief executive Elon Musk has suggested that his company could become one of the first to develop artificial general intelligence and may even deliver it in a humanoid robot. In a post on the social platform X in early March 2026, Musk said Tesla would likely be among the companies that achieve AGI and “probably the first to make it in humanoid form.”
AGI refers to a form of artificial intelligence capable of performing intellectual tasks across many domains at a level comparable to humans. Unlike today’s AI systems, which are trained for specific tasks such as writing text or recognising images, AGI would theoretically be able to learn new skills and reason in a much broader way.
Musk links AGI to Tesla’s humanoid robot
Musk’s remarks are closely tied to Tesla’s humanoid robot project called Optimus. The robot was first announced in 2021 as a general purpose machine designed to handle repetitive or dangerous tasks. A prototype was shown in 2022, and Tesla has continued refining the design since then.
Tesla believes that combining robotics with powerful AI systems could eventually produce machines capable of operating in real world environments. The company already gathers vast amounts of data from its electric vehicles and autonomous driving systems. Musk argues that this data and Tesla’s computing infrastructure give the company an advantage in building advanced AI.
Optimus is becoming central to Tesla’s long term plans
The Optimus robot is no longer a side project. Tesla has been preparing manufacturing lines and aims to eventually produce large numbers of the robots each year. Some plans even involve converting parts of its Fremont factory in California to support the program.
Musk has repeatedly described the robot as potentially more important than Tesla’s vehicle business in the long run. The company says the machines could eventually work in factories, perform household tasks or assist in physically demanding jobs.
A crowded race toward AGI
The race toward artificial general intelligence is intensifying across the technology industry. Companies such as OpenAI, Google DeepMind and several new AI startups are investing heavily in research aimed at building systems that can reason and learn more like humans.
Musk himself is involved in the race through multiple ventures. His AI startup xAI is working on large scale computing systems, while Tesla focuses on applying AI in physical machines such as robots and autonomous vehicles.
Whether Tesla will actually be the first to reach AGI remains uncertain. Many AI researchers say the technology is still years away and its timeline is difficult to predict. But Musk’s statement highlights how central robotics and AI have become to Tesla’s future strategy.
