A man has reportedly been sucked into a plane engine and killed on an airport runway in Milan. According to the reports, the man got sucked into the plane engine as the jet prepared to take off on tarmac.

Operations at the busy Orio al Serio Airport, popularly known as Milano Bergamo, came to a halt at 10.20 am local time Tuesday after the "fatal accident" on the tarmac.

According to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, the victim was neither a passenger nor an airport staff member.

It is said that the person may have run onto the tarmac and into the path of an Airbus A319 Volotea aircraft bound to Asturias in Spain, as it was preparing to take off.

The person was reportedly pulled into the aircraft engine just as the plane was preparing to depart, killing him.

Corriere della Sera, citing unnamed airport officials, said someone had seemingly run onto the tarmac as a plane was taking off and got sucked into the engine.

Reports say that Bergamo Milan airport authority, known as SACBO, confirmed a “problem that occurred on the taxiway” and said “the causes of the problem are currently being investigated by the authorities.

It  said all flights were suspended at the Bergamo-Orio al Serio airport at 10:20 a.m. local time “due to a problem that occurred on the taxiway.” An investigation was underway.

The airport in the northern Italian city of Bergamo suspended flights Tuesday due to a runway incident that local media said was apparently caused by someone running onto the tarmac and getting sucked into an airport engine.

Orio al Serio is one of Italy’s busiest airports. The flight operations have been suspended since the moment of the incident, affecting travel across the region.

As per reports, by 11.50 am local time, a total of nine flights had already been diverted including one to Bologna, two to Verona, and six rerouted to Milan Malpensa. Eight departures were also cancelled outright.
