Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has reportedly instructed senior aides on how to respond if he is killed in potential US or Israeli strikes, putting in place layered succession mechanisms and emergency command structures, according to The New York Times.
The reported move underscores the scale of geopolitical strain facing Tehran, as tensions with Washington intensify and regional security risks mount.
Citing interviews with senior Iranian officials, members of the Revolutionary Guards and former diplomats, The New York Times reported that Khamenei has named multiple layers of successors for key political and military roles. Decision-making authority has also been delegated to a tightly controlled inner circle in case communication lines are severed or the leadership is disrupted.
The strategy is designed to ensure continuity of governance even in the event of assassination or direct military confrontation.
At the height of nationwide protests and amid rising US threats of military action, Khamenei is said to have elevated longtime loyalist Ali Larijani to a central governing role, according to The New York Times.
Larijani, a former Revolutionary Guards commander and veteran politician, is not considered a likely successor to the supreme leader because he is not a senior Shiite cleric. However, the report describes him as one of Khamenei’s most trusted crisis managers.
Since assuming expanded responsibilities, Larijani has reportedly overseen the government’s response to protests, managed sensitive nuclear diplomacy with Washington and coordinated with regional actors including Russia, Qatar and Oman. He is also said to be involved in wartime planning as Iran prepares for possible US military action.
Amid escalating tensions, Iran has reportedly placed its armed forces on high alert, deployed missile systems near Iraq and along the Persian Gulf and conducted military drills.
Publicly, Khamenei has struck a defiant tone, warning that any attack on Iran would invite a forceful response.
