Following the declaration of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that attention is now shifting toward bringing the Russia-Ukraine conflict to an end -- and that it may happen soon. Speaking to reporters, Trump remarked, “Russia-Ukraine will also happen soon, the negotiations are on,” signaling that discussions aimed at resolving the war are actively underway.
The Gaza truce, described by Trump as a significant step toward “lasting peace,” includes the release of hostages held by Hamas in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. According to the US-led peace plan, the exchange is expected to be completed by Monday or Tuesday, marking the first stage of the broader diplomatic effort.
Trump expressed optimism that the ceasefire would lay the groundwork for long-term regional stability. He also revealed that he intends to visit the Middle East soon to continue diplomatic engagement. The US president added that he plans to cooperate with Iran as part of a wider strategy, noting that “recent military action against the country had been a key factor in facilitating the Gaza agreement.”
A formal signing ceremony for the Gaza peace accord is expected to take place in Egypt, Trump confirmed. His administration views the truce as a cornerstone achievement that could redefine relations across the region after two years of conflict.
The development has been met with international praise. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lauded Trump’s efforts, suggesting that the American leader should be considered for the Nobel Peace Prize “for his role in brokering the deal.” The Israeli foreign minister also called the agreement a decisive measure intended to bring hostilities between Israel and Hamas to an end.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined in commending Trump, describing the Gaza peace initiative as a “historic” success. Modi shared that he spoke with Trump to congratulate him and to “review the good progress achieved in trade negotiations,” adding that both leaders “agreed to stay in close touch over the coming weeks.”
The announcement comes as Trump signed a Columbus Day proclamation, capping a week of significant foreign policy moves for his administration. The Gaza ceasefire, hailed as a critical breakthrough, is now being seen as a potential prelude to ending another major global conflict -- the war between Russia and Ukraine.
