  • Nancy Guthrie, 84, believed taken against her will from Tucson home
  • FBI offers $50,000 reward; blood found at scene, ransom notes unconfirmed
  • No suspects or proof of life; investigation ongoing with over 100 tips received

Five days after Nancy Guthrie vanished from her home in the Catalina Foothills near Tucson, investigators say they believe the 84-year-old was taken against her will and did not leave on her own. But who took her and where she is remain unanswered questions, CNN reported.

Federal and local authorities are now working from a detailed timeline built from security systems, app data and witness interviews. The FBI has offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to her recovery or an arrest.

The last confirmed sighting

Guthrie was last seen Saturday evening, January 31, when she joined family members for dinner and game night. According to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, she arrived at her daughter Annie’s home by Uber around 5.32 pm. Detectives have interviewed the driver, who is not considered a suspect.

Family members later drove her back to her secluded home. Her garage door opened at 9.48 pm and closed two minutes later. Investigators believe she went inside for the night.

Activity in the early hours

Events after midnight are central to the case.

At 1.47 am on Sunday, Guthrie’s doorbell camera was disconnected. Authorities have confirmed it was removed, though they have not detailed whether it was damaged. At 2.12 am, nearby surveillance software detected movement. Investigators initially said it appeared to be a person, but later clarified it could have been an animal. Crucially, the camera that captured the motion did not retain footage because the owner did not subscribe to cloud storage.

At 2.28 am, data from Guthrie’s pacemaker app shows it disconnected from her cellphone. Her phone was later found inside the home. Law enforcement analysts suggest the disconnection may indicate she was moved away from the device at that time.

Discovery of the scene

When Guthrie failed to attend church Sunday morning, a friend contacted her family. Relatives went to her home around 11.56 am and found she was not there. A 911 call was placed at 12.03 pm, and deputies arrived minutes later.

Sheriff Nanos described receiving a text about the scene that prompted him to involve homicide investigators. Blood found on the front porch was later confirmed to belong to Guthrie. Authorities characterized it as minimal but concerning. Investigators have declined to say whether there were signs of forced entry.

Ransom notes and unanswered questions

At least three media outlets reported receiving ransom notes demanding bitcoin in exchange for Guthrie’s safe return. The FBI says it has not confirmed the authenticity of those messages, and the family has received no proof of life.

Another note sent directly to the family was determined to be fraudulent. A California man has been charged in connection with that false demand. Guthrie’s children, including “Today” host Savannah Guthrie, have made emotional public appeals urging anyone holding their mother to make contact and provide confirmation that she is alive. Authorities say more than 100 tips have been received, but as of now, there are no confirmed suspects and no verified communication from any abductor. Investigators continue to process physical evidence and canvass the rugged, sparsely surveilled neighbourhood as the search enters a critical stage.
