An Indian national was arrested in Bangkok’s Siam Square area on Monday after allegedly threatening people and police officers with a pistol-shaped lighter, sparking panic among onlookers.

The man, identified as Sahil Ram Thadani, 41, was charged with threatening behaviour and causing a public disturbance, according to Bangkok Post. The incident took place around 4 p.m. in front of the Novotel Bangkok on Siam Square Soi 6 in the Pathum Wan district.

Police were called after reports emerged of a man behaving erratically and pointing a gun-like object at pedestrians. Video footage circulating online showed Thadani carrying a backpack, dancing on the street, shouting at people, and brandishing what appeared to be a firearm.

He was later seen sitting on the ground and continuing to act aggressively as police and security guards approached him. Despite repeated attempts by officers to calm him down, Thadani refused to cooperate and continued to threaten both the public and police. The object was later confirmed to be a cigarette lighter designed to look like a pistol.

A video shared on X was captioned: "An Indian national in Bangkok created panic on the streets after he was seen roaming around with a lighter gun intimidating commuters & shouting abuses. The chaos forced the authorities to intervene, and he was eventually detained by the local police. Thankfully, no one was injured during the incident."

Thadani was taken to the Pathum Wan Police Station, where he was formally charged. Authorities suspect his erratic behaviour may have been influenced by hallucinations caused by cannabis consumption.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Thadani had previously served as a director of three companies in India, all of which have since ceased operations.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges have not been ruled out.
