An Indian national was assaulted by a group in Dublin's Tallaght on Saturday, in what Irish officials are calling a "mindless, racist" attack, according to Irish Independent. The man, who had only been in Ireland for three weeks, was hospitalised following the incident.

Police said that the assault took place on Parkhill Road around 6 pm and that the man was taken to Tallaght University Hospital for treatment. An investigation is currently underway.

Local Fine Gael councillor Baby Pereppadan, who met with the victim on Monday, described him as being in deep shock.

"He couldn’t speak much because of the trauma. He’s not taking any visitors currently," Pereppadan told the Irish Independent.

Calling for increased police presence in the area, Pereppadan highlighted a troubling pattern of smaller, frequent incidents in Tallaght.

“People need to realise that many Indian nationals moving to Ireland are here legally on work or study permits, contributing vital skills to the healthcare and IT sectors," Pereppadan  said.

Irish politician Seán Crowe, also condemned the assault. "The attack was vile and utterly unacceptable on every level. Some residents are now afraid to step outside, regardless of how long they've lived in the community," he said.

Crowe urged anyone with information to contact the police and stressed that while this wasn’t the first such incident in the area, it must be the last.

Meanwhile, the police have not yet made any arrests in the case but are appealing for witnesses as the investigation continues.
