The Trump administration officially confirmed over 4,000 job losses in seven critical departments, including US Treasury, Health and Human Services, Education and Commerce. Over 600,000 federal employees are already furloughed, with many others working without pay in critical areas such as in air traffic control and police enforcement. A collective group of employees just received their last partially paid cheque, with the president even insinuating not everyone will be getting legally required back pay due in days, according to the New York Times.
Native communities hit first
Indian communities have been early casualties. The Indian Health Service is still open, although support workers have been furloughed, shutting down reimbursement and many medical services such as diabetes control and telemedicine. Leaders fear that tribes, so dependent on federal funds, are "the canary in the coal mine" and experiencing effects first, prior to others.
Farmers under risk
Producers scheduling next year's crops rely on farm loans, subsidies and market information. With the Agriculture Department workers furloughed, many are denied low-interest loans or advice on crop insurance. Farmers already hurting due to the Trump trade war report that the shutdown has caused them to take loans at higher commercial rates and threatened the planting decisions for next season.
Public services interrupted
Federal agencies have cut back on services ranging from IRS customer support to environmental oversight. Taxpayers rushing to meet filing deadlines face long delays, while EPA offices monitoring drinking water safety have begun sending staff home. National parks have closed or reduced services, and construction projects requiring federal permits are on hold. These stoppages threaten to ripple into job losses if the shutdown continues for weeks.
Daily lives interrupted
For federal workers' families, the effect is direct. Staffers told CNN they have been reducing their budgets on necessities such as dining and entertainment. Programs such as food vouchers for poor children and their mothers will be affected if the shutdown extends. The pressure is also evident in the aviation sector, with staffing levels in controllers potentially leading to flight delays if the situation exceeds a sustainable period.
A political stalemate with no definitive endpoint
Even with soaring expenditures, the standoff between the Democrats and Republicans refuses to yield. The shutdown has been characterized by Trump as leverage to reduce programs he is against and restructure the federal bureaucracy, while he is determined that the Democrats prioritise health and funds for housing. Every passing day the standoff lasts, the shutdown digs deeper into American homes, companies and critical services.
