Panic gripped the waterfront in Southport, North Carolina, after a gunman opened fire from a boat near the American Fish Company restaurant late Saturday night, killing at least three people and injuring several others, according to multiple media reports.

The shooting unfolded shortly before 10 p.m. at the Southport Yacht Basin, where diners had gathered for live music. Witnesses said the boat pulled up to the dock before shots rang out into the crowd, Star News reported.

The suspect fled by boat and remained at large as of 10:30 p.m., City Manager Noah Saldo told the outlet. Authorities have not yet identified the victims or released information on a possible motive.

The City of Southport issued an “active shooter” alert, urging residents to stay indoors and report any suspicious activity. “There are reports of an active shooter in the Southport Yacht Basin. There is an unknown number of injuries. Avoid the area and remain in your homes,” officials said in a Facebook post.

The American Fish Company, described locally as a popular hangout, often features live music. On Saturday, the band “Bacon Grease” was scheduled to perform from 7 to 10 p.m., according to the venue’s social media.
