Canada is experiencing its second-worst wildfire season on record, with more than 700 active fires burning nationwide and 18.5 million acres of forest scorched so far this year. Only 2023 was worse, when over 42 million acres had burned by year’s end. Officials warn the 2024 season could still worsen, as fire activity often continues into September and October, the New York Times reported.
Unusually severe conditions
Wildfires are an annual occurrence in Canada, but this year’s season has been made more dangerous by persistent heat, drought, and a low winter snowpack, which left vegetation dry and highly flammable. Saskatchewan and Manitoba have seen the most intense blazes, including the massive Shoe fire in Saskatchewan, which has burned 1.4 million acres since May, larger than Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park.
Shift in danger zones
Recent rain and cooler weather in Saskatchewan and Manitoba have slowed fire growth in those provinces, but attention has turned east to Newfoundland and Labrador. Wildfires there, though historically rare, are now burning out of control in the “wildland-urban interface” — areas where homes border flammable vegetation. A state of emergency and heat warnings are in effect, with Premier John Hogan ordering a ban on outdoor burning and off-road vehicle use in forested areas.
Rising risk in other regions
Southern British Columbia, including parts of Vancouver Island, is also seeing a rise in wildfire activity as extremely dry conditions persist. In contrast, Quebec, which suffered devastating wildfires in 2023, has largely been spared this year thanks to heavy rainfall in spring and summer, especially in the southern regions.
Authorities brace for prolonged season
Officials are warning residents across affected provinces to be ready to evacuate if conditions worsen. With millions already impacted and hundreds of fires still uncontrolled, firefighting resources remain stretched nationwide. Meteorologists say that while localized rain can help, sustained hot and dry weather in other regions could keep Canada’s wildfire crisis active well into the autumn.
