EAM Jaishankar meets US envoy Sergio Gor on the sidelines of UNGA, following talks with Secretary Rubio

U.S. Special Envoy for South and Central Asia and Ambassador Nominee to India Sergio Gor met with India’s External Affairs Minister Jaishankar

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia and Ambassador Nominee to India, Sergio Gor, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

According to the US Department of State’s South and Central Asia Bureau, “US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia and Ambassador Nominee to India Sergio Gor met with India’s External Affairs Minister Jaishankar on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly. They look forward to further promoting the success of the US-India relationship.”

This meeting comes after Jaishankar held bilateral talks with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday at the Lotte New York Palace. “Agreed on the importance of sustained engagement to progress on priority areas,” Jaishankar posted on X, reflecting on discussions covering both bilateral and international issues.

This interaction marked the first face-to-face meeting between senior leaders of the two countries following US President Donald Trump’s imposition of an additional 25 percent tariff on India’s purchases of Russian oil, bringing the total tariffs to 50 percent.

The talks also come in the wake of Trump’s announcement of a $100,000 fee for new H-1B visas, which has added tension to U.S.-India ties.

The previous meeting between Jaishankar and Rubio took place in July during the Quad leaders’ gathering with Japan and Australia. Both sides emphasized the need for sustained engagement to advance shared priorities, including economic cooperation and regional security concerns, particularly related to China.
